"A year after making history, Canadian professional angler Jeff Gustafson looks to repeat as the champion of bass fishing's most prestigious tournament and take home its top prize.
Gustafson, who's from Kenora, grew up fishing on Lake of the Woods in northwestern Ontario and has turned a childhood obsession into a career. Last spring, he became the first Canadian and just the second non-American to win the Bassmaster Classic in its 53 years of competition. This year it's in Tulsa, Oklahoma."
"I attended the University of Windsor and returned to begin my on-air career with CBC News in Canada’s southernmost city, but despite having three distinct coastlines, I hadn’t really explored it by boat until this past summer.
The beauty of the region is that it’s got nearly everything you could ask for in freshwater boating. You’ve got big water of the Great Lakes to sheltered rivers and streams for paddling.
Over the course of two days, my mission was to explore as much of it as I could in as many different ways as possible."
"The key message here is that boating is amazing for kids. They can have fun, grow as people, and learn a lot if you do it right...
The bottom line is, kids around the world survive and thrive in much smaller spaces with far fewer entertainment options. Even though it can be a shockingly sparse landscape to a kid used to multiscreen homes full of toys and playdates, it’s a new world of adventures to go on, fun to have, and memories to make."
"The plan was this -- I would find something reflective of a true entry-level first-time boater who wanted to get into the lifestyle. I set a budget of $20,000 USD (approx. $25,000 CDN), or roughly the cost of a used SUV, and searched BoatDealers.ca to find boats in my home province of Ontario, as well as neighbouring provinces and states. We left the door open to traveling for pickup because it’s 100% possible to acquire and transport a vessel from just about anywhere. "
"Right off the bat, let me reiterate what I say every time we include fishing on an episode of Water Ways: I’m not very good. But I do really enjoy it and I love picking the brains of people around me to get better.
Luckily, some of those brains are pro anglers like Bob Izumi; teen fishing phenom and TV host, Averie Rose Bonin and my father-in-law who ran a charter business on the Great Lakes, so the advice I gather is as solid as it comes..."
"...multiple people who me I would “quickly get bored of Toronto harbour” or that “there’s nothing to do in Lake Ontario” and that it was only a matter of time before I moved marinas to a much more appropriate setting just north of the city.
With all due respect to my pals who boat in Georgian Bay, I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon..."
"Port Colborne is one of the best kept secrets of Ontario’s boating scene, as far as I’m concerned. I got some serious Florida-vibes here! When I first did the Welland it was to do a video shoot simply of transiting the Welland and then a couple days later we went back. I barely explored the region, but what I did enticed me to come back. So I did.
This summer, my wife, father-in-law and six-year-old son tackled the Welland’s unbound journey and I spent a full week in Port Colborne exploring by land and water. I was not disappointed. "
"Five Amphicars is a collection beyond comprehension. It’s a massively high percentage, especially when you consider how few have survived to the 2020’s from the 1960’s...
That may seem small but that percentage of Toyota Corollas ever made (44 million) would be 55,125 cars, or rounding Tesla’s total production to 2 million vehicles would mean a similar percentage collection would be 2,500 electric cars."
